マスコミに踊らされないための地球温暖化論入門

地球温暖化の問題ではセンセーショナルな報道がたくさんなされていますが、そこには誇張や演出、情報操作といった行為が少なからず含まれているようです。そこでマスコミに踊らされたくない人のための転ばぬ先の杖となる資料とリンクを中心として紹介しています(ＰＤＦファイルが多いので開けるときは注意してください)。また、ページの最後の方に「温暖化の分子分光学入門」と称して持論も少しだけ展開しております。

* メディアで取り上げられるツバル沈没の映像は、大潮時に多孔質でできた珊瑚の地下からの海水の湧き上がり現象が起きているときのもの。オーストラリア国立潮汐研究施設がツバルの首都フナフティに93年に設置した潮汐計では、これまでのところ平均海面高の顕著な変化は観測されていない。正確な海面上昇の傾向を知るには少なくとも数十年規模の観測が必要とされている。

* 英国のスターン・レビュー(2006年10月30日発表)の著者、Nicholas Sternは、地球温暖化は珊瑚を死滅させるだろうと述べている。また、グリーンピースおよび世界自然保護基金（WWF）は、暗礁が地球温暖化によって脅かされると主張している[Ref]。ちなみに、Nicolas Sternは世界銀行の元チーフ・エコノミストで、現在は英国政府気候変動・開発における経済担当政府特別顧問である。

* 世界自然保護基金(WWF)の報告書（2005年3月14日）には、「ヒマラヤ山の氷河は、地球温暖化の影響によって地球上の氷河の中で最も速く後退している」とし、「中国、インド、ネパールの氷河に依存した川に頼る何億もの人々が水不足に陥るだろう」と主張した。このWWFによる明らかな事実誤認に基づく報告は、CNN、ロイター、ABCニュース、ナショナル・ジオグラフィックなどの多くのメディアで無条件に取り上げられることになった[Ref]。Marlo Lewisは、「最初に、水道設備は氷河から来ません。ローカルの水道設備を供給するのは年間積雪量からの溶解です。年間積雪量はその地域で増加しています」と述べている。

* 今では「"北極の氷山"が溶けて東京が水没する」という人も少なくなってきたと思うが、1990年当時、国立環境研究所の古川昭雄氏は、「環境影響」大来佐武郎監修『講座地球環境第一巻地球規模の環境問題<Ⅰ>』（中央法規出版）の中でこう述べている。「地球の温暖化によって北極の氷山が溶解し、海面が上昇して標高の低い地域、例えば東京の０メートル地帯は水没し、居住可能面積が減少することが危惧されている」

* 地球規模の海洋大循環（海洋コンベアベルト）の原因として、これまで熱潮循環（熱潮ポンプ）が考えられていた。しかし、海洋物理学者の第一人者であるCarl Wunschによれば海洋の大循環に必要なエネルギーの半分は風力、残りの半分は潮汐による海水移動によって海底で生じる摩擦熱であることがほぼ明らかになった。ちなみに、映画「デイ・アフター・トゥモロー」では氷河の融解などによる淡水の流れ込みが熱潮循環をストップさせ寒冷化が起こると想定しているが、今ではこの設定自体の信憑性はほとんどない。
